A mini-microbial fuel cell for voltage testing of exoelectrogenic bacteria

摘要: Current methods for testing the electricity generation capacity of isolates are time- and labor-consuming. This paper presents a rapid voltage testing system of exoelectrogenic bacteria called Quickscreen, which is based on a microliter microbial fuel cell (MFC). and were used as the model exoelectrogenic bacteria; that cannot generate electricity was used as a negative control. It was found that the electricity generation capacity of the isolates could be determined within about five hours by using Quickscreen, and that its time was relatively rapid compared with the time needed by using larger MFCs. A parallel, stable, and low background voltage was achieved using titanium as a current collector in the blank run. The external resistance had little impact on the blank run during the initial period. The cathode with a five-hole configuration, used to hydrate the carbon cathode, gave higher cathode potentials than did that with a one-hole configuration. Steady discharge and current interrupt methods showed that the anode mostly contributed to the large internal resistance of the Quickscreen system. However, the addition of graphite felt decreased the resistance from 18kΩ to 5kΩ. This device was proved to be useful to rapidly evaluate the electricity generation capacity of different bacteria.

Low-dose CT for lung cancer screening: opportunities and challenges

Lung cancer is among the most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide and the leading cause of cancer death in both males and females. Screening for lung cancer coupled with earlier intervention has long been studied as an approach to mortality reduction. However, minimal progress was achieved until recently, when low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) screening demonstrated a 20% reduction in mortality from lung cancer in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), the National Lung Screening Trial, from the United States. On the basis of this finding, LDCT has been recommended for lung cancer screening in high-risk populations by several clinical guidelines. However, results from the following independent RCTs in Europe failed to show consistent conclusions. In addition, intractable problems gradually emerged with the progress of LDCT screening. This paper summarizes and discusses the main observations and challenges of LDCT screening for lung cancer. Before spreading implementation of LDCT screening, challenges, including high false-positive rates, overdiagnosis, enormous costs, and radiation risk, must be addressed. Complementary biomarkers and technical improvement are expected in the field of lung cancer screening in the near future.

Systematic screening procedure and innovative energy-saving design for ionic liquid-based extractive

摘要: In the traditional extractive distillation process, organic solvents are often used as entrainers. However, environmental influence and high energy-consumption are significant problems in industrial application. In this study, a systematic screening strategy and innovative energy-saving design for ionic liquid-based extractive distillation process was proposed. The innovative energy-saving design focused on the binary minimum azeotrope mixtures isopropanol and water. Miscibility, environmental impact and physical properties (e.g., melting point and viscosity) of 30 ionic liquids were investigated. 1-Ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide were selected as candidate entrainers. Feasibility analysis of these two ionic liquids was further performed via residue curve maps, isovolatility line and temperature profiles. An innovative ionic liquid-based extractive distillation process combining distillation column and stripping column was designed and optimized with the objective function of minimizing the total annualized cost. The results demonstrate that the total annualized cost was reduced by 19.9% with 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide as the entrainer and by 24.3% with 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide, compared with that of dimethyl sulfoxide. The method proposed in this study is conducive to the green and sustainable development of extractive distillation process.

Development of New Modality Municipal Public Transportation for Guangzhou—Group Rapid Transit System

摘要: As one of the primary business centers of China, Guangzhou has been undergoing rapid growth and expansion. Over the past decade, the Guangzhou Municipality Government has significantly upgraded its transport infrastructure, especially with the highly beneficial expansion of its Subway Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. Positive steps have also been taken to continue planning the construction of new roads, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and other transportation facilities. Further administrative and regulatory measures have also been implemented to control the situation, such as the banning of motorcycles from the central city area and the limitation of new automobile registrations. However, Guangzhou continues to face serious challenges of traffic congestion in and around the city center owing to further intensification of its population with economic growth. The need to ease Guangzhou’s stretched public transportation resources, and at the same time to support the realization of its “Eastward Advance” strategy, presents a unique challenge and opportunity to develop an advanced high-efficiency public transportation modality for Guangzhou, viz. the Group Rapid Transit (GRT) involving the use of automation-guided (driverless) smart-vehicles. This paper outlines the PRT/GRT (PRT: Personal Rapid Transit) smart-vehicle modality and also puts forth a proposal of Guangzhou’s first GRT route as the city’s first dedicated transportation link to the scenic landscape of the Eastern Tourism Zone. This GRT route will help in diffusing the city’s traffic congestion as well as support the effectuation of Guangzhou’s “Eastern Expansion” strategy, supplementing the ongoing expansion of the Guangzhou Municipality’s subway MRT networks.

Error compensation for tool-tip trace during cutting of laminated paper for rapid prototyping

摘要: Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is one of the commercialized rapid prototyping (RP) processes, where a focused laser is usually used to cut the cross-section contours of a 3 D part and the grid hatchings of the part-exterior region on a sheet paper stack-wise. Using a laser beam as a cutter can be costly, and the thermal burning of a sheet paper along a laser scanning path can also cause an environment-polluting smoke. This paper presents a paper laminating RP system using a knife as the paper cutter instead of a laser beam. The knife holder is mounted through a radial bearing on the - positioning mechanism in such a way that the knife tip is eccentric to the bearing axis by a small distance (so-called offset). Therefore, the knife tip, which engages into the sheet paper during cutting, tends to follow the path of the -driven bearing axis by the error that depends on the path tangential and the eccentricity of the knife tip. A tractrix model is applied to describe the kinetic motion of the knife tip and a method is formulated to compensate for the tracing error of the eccentric knife tip by modifying the original cross-section contours of the part for each layer based on the tractrix equation. A study has also been performed regarding the effect of the knife tip geometry on the cutting notch of the sheet paper and on the roughness of the finished part.

Combination of ARTP mutagenesis and color-mediated high-throughput screening to enhance 1-naphthol yield

摘要: Strain QCG of the aerobic bacteria is capable of producing 1-naphthol from naphthalene, this strain was first isolated and characterized in this study. Strain QCG was mutagenized to enhance 1-naphthol production, using atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) technology. Then, a microbial clone screening system was used to accelerate the operation. Meanwhile, a novel color-mediated high-throughput screening using 4-aminoantipyrine was performed to screen mutants. The optimal mutant strain QCG4 produced 19.58±0.34 mg∙L 1-naphthol from naphthalene that was 47.32% higher than that of the original strain (13.29±0.28 mg∙L ). In addition, the optimal conditions for 1-naphthol production via whole-cell catalysis of strain QCG4 were determined to be an OD of 40, 150 mg∙L naphthalene, and 7.5% dimethyl formamide as a co-solvent at pH 7.5 and 26°C for 3 h, resulting in 41.18±0.12 mg∙L 1-naphthol, i.e., the mutant strain produces a 2.1-fold higher yield compared to the original strain.

Total stress rapid drawdown analysis of the Pilarcitos Dam failure using the finite element method

摘要: Rapid drawdown is a critical design condition for the upstream or riverside slope of earth dams and levees. A new total stress rapid drawdown method based on finite element analysis is used to analyze the rapid drawdown failure that occurred at Pilarcitos Dam in 1969. Effective consolidation stresses in the slope prior to drawdown are determined using linear elastic finite element analysis. Undrained strengths from isotropically consolidated undrained (ICU) triaxial compression tests are related directly to the calculated consolidation stresses and assigned to the elements in the model by interpolation. Two different interpretations of the undrained strength envelope are examined. Strength reduction finite element analyses are used to evaluate stability of the dam. Back analysis suggests that undrained strengths from ICU tests must be reduced by 30% for use with this rapid drawdown method. The failure mechanism predicted for Pilarcitos Dam is sensitive to the relationship between undrained strength and consolidation stress.

Experimental study and field application of calcium sulfoaluminate cement for rapid repair of concrete

摘要: The fast-track repair of deteriorated concrete pavement requires materials that can be placed, cured, and opened to the traffic in a short period. Type III cement and Calcium Sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement are the most commonly used fast-setting hydraulic cement (FSHC). In this study, the properties of Type III and CSA cement concrete, including compressive strength, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and shrinkage were evaluated. The test results indicate that compressive strength of FSHC concrete increased rapidly at the early age. CSA cement concrete had higher early-age and long term strength. The shrinkage of CSA cement concrete was lower than that of Type III cement concrete. Both CSA and Type III cement concrete had similar CTE values. Based on the laboratory results, the CSA cement was selected as the partial-depth rapid repair material for a distressed continuously reinforced concrete pavement. The data collected during and after the repair show that the CSA cement concrete had good short-term and long-term performances and, therefore, was suitable for the rapid repair of concrete pavement.

Design and characteristics of electric supercharger for diesel engine acceleration by additional rapid

摘要: The ES (electric supercharger) driven by a high-speed brushless motor was developed to solve the problem of smoke caused by the turbocharger s sluggish response during acceleration. Its rotation speed was from 6 000 r/min to 24 000 r/min, and the maximum flux was 0.1 kg/s. The structural design of the electric supercharger is novel, which makes it easier to set the lubricating installation and to assemble. The velocity distribution at the outlet of the electric supercharger is determined by hot-wire anemometry under various rotation speeds in steady state. Furthermore, the trends of the flux and charge rate with various speeds were analyzed. In addition, the transient response was detected from the motor setup to smooth running within 10 s, 15 s, 20 s and 25 s respectively, and the characteristic of the transient flux is under pilot study. Research results indicate that the electric supercharger can respond rapidly with the great flux, and it is independent of the operating conditions of a diesel engine. Therefore, it is a feasible way to reduce smoke emission and improve the acceleration performance.

Status of hyperhomocysteinemia in China: results from the China Stroke High-risk Population Screening

摘要: A nationwide survey was conducted from October 2018 to September 2019 to assess the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) and its influencing factors in China. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect information. Hhcy was defined as the level of serum homocysteine (HCY) 15.0 µmol/L. The H-type hypertension (HHYP) was defined as hypertension with an elevated serum HCY (15.0 µmol/L). Finally, 110 551 residents 40 years of age from 31 provinces in the mainland of China were included. Overall, the median serum HCY level was 10.9 µmol/L (interquartile range 7.9–15.1). A total of 28 633 participants (25.9%) were defined as Hhcy. The Hhcy prevalence ranged from 7.9% in Shanghai to 56.8% in Tianjin. The data showed that serum HCY levels were associated with age, male gender, cigarette smoking, hypertension, diabetes, ethnicity, endurance in exercise (inverse), and fruit and vegetable intake (inverse). In addition, 15 486 participants were defined as HHYP, and the rate was 14.0%. HHYP was an independent predictor of stroke with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.752 (95% CI 1.338–2.105). The geographical distribution pattern of the Hhcy epidemic reflects dynamic differences, and national strategies should be carried out to further improve the care of patients with Hhcy across China.

Screening of potential aquatic probiotics from the major microflora of guppies (

摘要: The fish ( ) was used as the source for probiotics. 46 bacterial isolates were obtained from the skin, gills, guts and intestines of the guppy, (collected from a government model fish farm in Kottayam, India). Of the above isolated strains, four isolates were selected based on their inhibitory spectrum against five indicator strains, 1739, 3906, 2495, 1271 and 1424 (standard cultures collected from Microbial Type Culture Collection (MTCC) Chandigarh, India). Among the resulting isolates, two were gram-positive cocci, namely MBTU-PB2 and MBTU-PB3 and belong to the genus . The other two were gram-negative rods, namely MBTU-PB1 and MBTU-PB4, of the genera and , respectively. The basic probiotic characteristics of these isolates such as the production of bacteriocin like inhibitory substances (BLIS), antibiotic sensitivities and growth profiles were also determined. The above four isolated strains exhibited different antagonisms than the five indicator strains. During incubation, the antibacterial activity gradually increased in the inhibition zone and was influenced by the lag period ( ) and doubling time. The lag periods for most of the four selected strains were shorter than those of the indicator strains and the isolates had different growth rates ( ) than the indicator strains. All four isolates produced BLIS, however, the strains had different BLIS activities against the indicator strains. Treatment of the neutralized cell free supernatants of the selected isolates with proteases eliminated or reduced the BLIS activity, suggesting a proteinaceous nature of the inhibitory compounds. Further, the optimum BLIS activity was observed at neutral pH after 18 h of incubation. The antibiotic sensitivity assay revealed that the isolates were susceptible to routinely used antibiotics, whereas the plasmid profiles showed that the plasmids had no role in the antagonistic properties of the four isolated strains. The results showed that the isolates could be a promising source for biocontrol agents in aquacultures.

Application of rapid thermal processing on SiN thin film to solar cells

摘要: Rapid thermal processing (RTP) of SiN thin films from PECVD with low temperature was investigated. A special processing condition of this technique which could greatly increase the minority lifetime was found in the experiments. The processing mechanism and the application of the technique to silicon solar cells fabrication were discussed. A main achievement is an increase of the minority lifetime in silicon wafer with SiN thin film by about 200% after the RTP was reached. PC-1D simulation results exhibit an enhancement of the efficiency of the solar cell by 0.42% coming from the minority lifetime improvement. The same experiment was also conducted with P-diffusion silicon wafers, but the increment of minority lifetime is just about 55%. It could be expected to improve the solar cell efficiency if it would be used in silicon solar cells fabrication with the combination of laser firing contact technique.

Low-k integration: Gas screening for cryogenic etching and plasma damage mitigation

摘要: The integration of porous organo-silicate low- materials has met a lot of technical challenges. One of the main issues is plasma-induced damage, occurring for all plasma steps involved during interconnects processing. In the present paper, we focus on porous SiOCH low- damage mitigation using cryogenic temperature so as to enable micro-capillary condensation. The aim is to protect the porous low- from plasma-induced damage and keep the -value of the material unchanged, in order to limit the RC delay of interconnexion levels while shrinking the microchip dimension. The cryogenic temperature is used to condense a gas inside the porous low- material. Then, the etching process is performed at the temperature of condensation in order to keep the condensate trapped inside the material during the etching. In the first part of this work, the condensation properties of several gases are screened, leading to a down selection of five gases. Then, their stability into the porous structure is evaluated at different temperature. Four of them are used for plasma damage mitigation comparison. Damage mitigation is effective and shows negligible damage for one of the gases at –50°C.
